SCYNEXIS Presents Data Demonstrating that SCY-635 Restores the Body's Innate Immune Response to HCV

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. (Nov. 7, 2011) -- Drug discovery company SCYNEXIS, Inc. today presented data demonstrating that SCY-635--a novel, oral cyclophilin inhibitor being studied for the treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection--reactivates the body's natural defense mechanism, making it capable of inhibiting replication of the virus.

The data positions SCY-635 as a potential replacement for recombinant interferon--a component of the standard of care for hepatitis C treatment that is associated with significant side effects.

The data were presented in a poster session at the 61st Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) in San Francisco. SCY-635 is currently undergoing Phase 2 studies.

"The results of this study introduce a completely novel mechanism to treat HCV and suggest that our oral cyclophilin inhibitor, SCY-635, could potentially replace recombinant interferon--a primary goal in the development of new treatment protocols for this disease," said Yves Ribeill, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of SCYNEXIS. "HCV is a complex disease where the virus cloaks and hides itself from the body's immune system. SCY-635 uncloaks the virus -- making it visible to the immune system. In studies conducted to date, SCY-635 has been well-tolerated and demonstrated single-agent, clinically meaningful activity. It has also demonstrated an excellent in vitro drug - drug interaction profile with other approved products and leading products in clinical development, suggesting that SCY-635 could play an important role in the quest for a new standard of care in HCV."

"This is different than other therapeutic approaches to eradicating HCV because SCY-635 acts primarily at the level of the host innate immune response pathway," said Sam Hopkins, Ph.D., Chief Scientific Officer of SCYNEXIS. "Acting predominantly at the level of a host target, cyclophilin A, lessens the likelihood of developing resistance which is typically associated with direct acting antiviral agents."

In the poster presentation entitled, "The Non-Immunosuppressive Cyclophilin Inhibitor SCY-635 Exerts Clinical Anti-HCV Activity by Up Regulating the Expression of Endogenous Interferons," SCYNEXIS demonstrated that treatment with SCY-635 monotherapy resulted in dose and concentration dependent increases in the plasma protein concentrations of multiple endogenous interferons including interferon alpha and interferon lambda-1 in patients chronically infected with genotype 1a hepatitis C virus. The upregulated expression of multiple interferons was associated with increased expression of interferon stimulated genes. The data also show a correlation of SCY-635 plasma levels and the expression of type 1 and type 3 interferons; the presence of these interferons demonstrate that the body is now able to respond to the virus.

SCYNEXIS also presented two additional studies of SCY-635 at AASLD. In one study, SCYNEXIS showed that consistent with the clinical observations, SCY-635 results in an increased expression of multiple type 1 and 3 interferons in vitro and that SCY-635 is equally as effective as IFNa-2b in clearing HCV and preventing viral rebound in vitro. The final study examined potential drug interactions between SCY-635 and telaprevir and demonstrated that SCY-635 presented a lower risk of potential adverse drug-drug interactions when compared in vitro with other cyclophilin inhibitors.

About SCY-635 and SCYNEXIS' Cyclophilin Inhibitor Platform
SCY-635 represents a new class of therapeutic agents for the treatment of HCV infection. SCY-635 is the first candidate in a novel class of non-immunosuppressive, oral cyclophilin inhibitors owned by SCYNEXIS. Cyclophilins are a family of enzymatic proteins that assist in the folding and transport of other proteins synthesized within a cell. Scientists at SCYNEXIS have synthesized derivatives of Cyclosporine A in which cyclophilin binding activity (which mediates anti-HCV activity) is separated from calcineurin binding activity (which mediates immunosuppression). A growing body of scientific evidence indicates that non-immunosuppressive analogs of Cyclosporine A may have applications in multiple therapeutic areas. Cyclophilins play a central role in the pathophysiology of chronic viral infection, neuro- and cardio- degenerative diseases. Cyclophilin inhibition therefore represents an attractive target for drug discovery and development.

About SCYNEXIS
SCYNEXIS is a premier drug discovery and development company delivering effective and innovative drug pipeline solutions to pharmaceutical and global health partners. Our record of success is demonstrated by the delivery of 11 pre-clinical and clinical drug candidates over the last 5 years. The Company, which is located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, is developing a proprietary internal pipeline based on cyclophilin inhibitors, a class of drugs that hold significant potential for the treatment of a broad range of diseases. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (Oct. 20, 2011) – Virginia Hardee’s® restaurants will celebrate the 2011 college football season on Saturday as fans watch to see if a special field goal clears the uprights.

One lucky student from the University of Virginia will be chosen from the stands in Scott Stadium to kick a field goal after the third quarter of the Cavaliers’ 3:30 p.m. game against North Carolina State University for the chance to win a one-year supply of free Hardee’s Chicken Tender™ Wrappers.

If the field goal kicked from the 25 yards away is successful, every fan will leave the stadium Saturday with a coupon for a free Hand-Breaded Chicken Tender Wrapper.

Close to 200 Hardee’s locations in Virginia will participate in the promotion.

“We recognize how important college athletics are in the lives of many of our customers,” said Jerry Allsbrook, chief marketing officer for Boddie-Noell Enterprises, the largest Hardee’s franchisee in the U.S. “We’re looking forward to continuing our tradition of supporting our fans’ love of football with this on-field kick promotion.”

Hardee’s Hand-Breaded Chicken Tender Wrappers were added to the menu last December, making Hardee’s Hand-Breaded Chicken Tenders portable and affordable at $1.49. The Chicken Tender™Wrapper is made with one Hand-Breaded Chicken Tender rolled in a flour tortilla with shredded lettuce and shredded cheese. The Wrapper comes with a choice of Ranch, Honey Mustard, BBQ or Creamy Buffalo sauce.

Hardee’s Hand-Breaded Chicken Tenders are fresh, all-white-meat chicken tenders, hand-dipped in eggs and buttermilk and lightly breaded. The Tenders were added to the menu last year and were introduced to Hardee’s by Boddie-Noell who first developed the menu item in the company’s test kitchens.

New Kent Winery "Humbled and Honored" to Receive 2011 Virginia Governor's Cup for Its Wine

RICHMOND, Va. (Oct. 7, 2011) - New Kent Winery's 2009 Reserve Chardonnay has been awarded the 2011 Virginia Governor's Cup for white wines, the top award given for wines grown in the state.

The Governor’s Cup was presented to New Kent Managing Partner Pete Johns and the winery’s winemaker, Tom Payette, by Gov. Bob McDonnell and First Lady Maureen McDonnell at ceremonies at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts where the winner was announced.

New Kent's 2009 Chardonnay Reserve was judged best from among 162 wines entered from 52 wineries, representing all of the appellations in the Commonwealth. The 30th annual Virginia Governor's Cup competition for white wines was sponsored by the Virginia Wineries Association.

“I am humbled and honored to accept this award and do so with great pride,” said Johns in accepting the award this week. “I acknowledge my partners in this winery, Boddie-Noell Enterprises, the wonderful New Kent Winery staff and our exceptional winemaker, Tom Payette. Tom's expertise and magical touch has helped New Kent Winery establish itself as one of Virginia's premier wineries."

Johns and Payette have worked closely for more than eight years to establish vineyards for the Winery which opened publicly in 2008.

"What a huge honor to be recognized for our 2009 Chardonnay Reserve,” said Payette. “It’s a privilege to work with such fine people at New Kent Winery and I am blessed to be able to do what I love to do - making wine, especially this beautiful Chardonnay."

Fermentation on the yeast lees in small premium American oak barrels makes this well rounded creamy Virginia Reserve Chardonnay unique among other wines. Extremely youthful despite its vintage, New Kent Winery's 2009 Reserve Chardonnay pairs beautifully with flavorful cheeses and all types of shellfish, veal, pork, poultry, seafood and cream sauce pasta dishes, according to Johns.

New Kent Winery is part of a large Master Planned Community, the New Kent Vineyards which includes the nearby upscale residential development
Viniterra. The Winery was constructed from historic materials, including pre-Civil War oversized handmade brick, reclaimed heart pine columns, beams and trusses and cypress logs that were under water for more than 150 years.

The Governor's Cup for white wines was selected from seven Gold medalist wineries. A panel of 26 judges from five states judged the wines, which represent all of the appellations in the Commonwealth. The Virginia red wines were judged earlier this year and announced at the Virginia Wine Expo in February.

Several noted journalists and other wine aficionados were among the judging staff including Jeff Siegel (Dallas Morning News), Tony Lawrence (Wine Chef Philadelphia), Deborah Parker Wong, (Northern California editor for The Tasting Panel) along with retailers from Virginia and Maryland.

The rapid growth of Virginia's vibrant wine industry has made it one of the fastest-growing agricultural sectors in the state. Today, there are over 190 wineries, with growth escalating as fast as the state's advancements in wine quality and reputation.

The Virginia Governor’s Cup Wine Competition has been held in Virginia since 1982. The competition is open to Virginia appellation wines and ciders that use 95 percent or greater fruit grown in Virginia.

New Kent Winery is located in the heart of New Kent Vineyards, a multifaceted mixed-use planned community. In keeping with the rural setting of the county, the community has vineyards scattered throughout the project which serve as a buffer from the parkway that travels through the community.

Innovative Vector Control Consortium Announces Discovery Project with SCYNEXIS

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, North Carolina and LIVERPOOL, U.K. (July 12, 2011) - The Innovative Vector Control Consortium (IVCC) announced today that it has signed an agreement with drug discovery and development company SCYNEXIS, Inc. to find potential candidate compounds suitable for development into new insecticide active ingredients to protect public health.

New active ingredients are urgently needed to combat insecticide resistance which is a growing problem in the global fight against malaria.

Under the agreement, SCYNEXIS will screen its extensive chemical library, which was specifically targeted as insecticides, for activity against adult mosquitoes, and create a platform for screening other chemical libraries from companies and groups around the world.

The project will aim to deliver a target list of compounds suitable for taking forward for further development.

Dr. Tom McLean, IVCC’s chief operating officer, said: “We look forward to working with SCYNEXIS and are hopeful that their expertise in insecticide discovery research will yield further candidates for development as new active ingredients. Disease control programmes rely on effective insecticides for vector control and resistance to all the insecticides currently approved for vector control is already present in some mosquito populations, posing a major threat to recent gains in malaria control. This project joins our other discovery programmes aimed at developing three new active ingredients unaffected by known resistance mechanisms by 2020.”

“SCYNEXIS is pleased to participate in this important project and looks forward applying its technology and expertise to the delivery of compound candidates for effective mosquito control,’’ said Dr. Yves Ribeill, president & chief executive officer of SCYNEXIS, Inc. “Through the SCYNEXIS Global Health Alliance, we are committed to providing advanced screening technology to identify compounds that can potentially be useful in global health to control protozoans, helminths and insect vectors and to advancing these compounds through integrated discovery programs to the clinic.”

About The Innovative Vector Control Consortium
The IVCC is a Product Development Partnership (PDP) established as a not-for-profit company and registered charity to overcome the barriers to innovation in the development of new insecticides for public health vector control and to develop information systems and tools which will enable new and existing pesticides to be used more effectively.

Petersburg Hardee's Biscuit Maker Wins Top Award in Boddie-Noell's 2011 Biscuit Maker Challenge

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (April 27, 2011) – Boddie-Noell Enterprises announced today that Leziel Sanders of Petersburg, VA., is the 2011 overall champion of the company’s annual Hardee’s Biscuit Maker Challenge.

Sanders was selected in judged competition as the best among some 740 biscuit makers at 336 Hardee’s restaurants operated by Boddie-Noell, the largest Hardee’s franchise operator in the United States. She bakes Made from Scratch™ biscuits at the Hardee’s at 2839 Hickory Hill Road in Petersburg.

Sanders was one of four regional winners selected from the Hardee’s operated by Boddie-Noell across North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina and Kentucky. The other three regional winners are Janet Thomas of Aberdeen, Wayne Newman of Martinsville, VA., and last year’s overall winner, Lee Damien of Virginia Beach, VA.

Boddie-Noell honored the four regional winners during a banquet at the company’s Rose Hill Conference Center near Nashville, N.C. during which the Biscuit Maker champion was announced. Photos of the four biscuit-making finalists will be featured later this year on paper tray liners provided to in-store customers at all Hardee’s operated by Boddie-Noell.

The competition started in December, and each biscuit maker was evaluated on the quality of his or her biscuits, knowledge, cleanliness and care of biscuit equipment, knowledge and execution of company procedures, grooming and appearance. The competition’s judges included general and district managers, regional directors and vice presidents of operations and other executives in the restaurant division of Boddie-Noell.

Sanders said that she was stunned when it was announced at the awards events that she won. “I was very grateful and very happy,” she said. “I’m very proud, just overwhelmed. It’s making me smile a lot.”

While Sanders had worked at the Hardee’s location for less than two years, she had been a biscuit maker for only about two months when she entered the competition. That short amount of time perfecting her biscuit-making skills is the least amount of experience baking Hardee’s biscuits of any biscuit maker to win the competition since it began in 1983. It’s a tribute to her baking skills, to carefully following procedures and her commitment to make the perfect golden brown Hardee’s biscuit.

“That she has been baking biscuits for only two months when this competition began shows how meticulous she is,” said Mike Zollo, a Boddie-Noell regional vice president who oversees Hardee’s operations in Sanders’ area. “She’s got competitiveness but also has a really nice smile on her face and it shows with this a special achievement for her.”

Sanders, who comes from a large Philippine family, loves to cook and especially to barbecue. Her favorite breakfast menu item is the sausage biscuit. In her spare time she loves to garden and play Scrabble with her husband William and friends.

“We have some amazing biscuit makers within our company, folks who take real pride in what they create each morning,” said Terry Lewis, Boddie-Noell’s vice president of operations for Hardee’s and host of the Biscuit Maker Banquet. “They make fantastic biscuits that are a signature menu item for Hardee’s and we’re very proud to have them working for our company.”

Hardee’s Made from Scratch™ biscuits, which have been served at Boddie-Noell restaurants since the 1970’s, are a critical part of the restaurant’s menu. In 2010, Hardee’s restaurants owned and operated by Boddie-Noell used 772,360 pounds of biscuit flour, 9,852,645 pounds of biscuit mix and 676,000 gallons of buttermilk to make the golden brown biscuits – enough flour, mix and buttermilk to fill 420 tractor-trailers.

Bailey's Fine Jewelry's Joyce Satterfield Wins Herend Design Contest

GREENVILLE, N.C. (Jan. 14, 2011) – Joyce Satterfield, a sales associate at Bailey’s Fine Jewelry in Greenville, has won the prestigious Kingdom Classic design competition sponsored by porcelain manufacturer Herend® with a nomination she submitted featuring the peace dove.

Herend, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of porcelain, holds its Kingdom Classic contest annually in search of a design to be turned into a special-edition figurine.

Satterfield submitted her nomination of a peace dove with an olive branch in its beak last February. She found out a few months later that the peace dove had been chosen to be turned into the 2011 Kingdom Classic figurine. To date, it has been created in gold, platinum and rust. It will also be available in rust, blue, black, butterscotch and green at stores this spring.

The Kingdom Classic contest was recently opened to employees of Herend retailers which includes Bailey’s. Satterfield saw the contest as an opportunity to spread peace and joy in trying times.

“I’m extremely pleased with how the figurine turned out,” said Satterfield. “My nomination was inspired by both biblical references and events in our modern life. I just thought that the world needs peace and what better way to show that than a peace dove with an olive branch.”

Satterfield’s peace dove will make its debut at the Atlanta International Gift and Home Furnishings Market this week. The figurine will be available from all Herend retailers. Herend is currently sold in 375 retail stores in 42 states and on five continents.

Herend is sold at Bailey’s Fine Jewelry locations in Greenville, Rocky Mount and Raleigh’s Cameron Village. The figurine will be permanently retired at the end of the year.
