Developer Flips the Switch to Energize Solar-Power System from Baker Renewable Energy
FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. – (Nov.1 2009) The developers of one of this town’s most historic building renovation projects flipped a switch this week energizing electrical power produced through a rooftop solar-energy project built by Baker Renewable Energy.
With local dignitaries and a representative of the state’s Renewable Energy office on hand, the developers of The Historic Mitchell Building sent electrical power produced by the bank of photovoltaic cells onto the electrical utility power grid.
The system from Baker creates renewable energy through some 72 photovoltaic laminate panels that are only one-quarter inch thick but linked together generate 10 kilowatts of power. That power will be sold by developers Eric and Mary Christofferson to Progress Energy through a direct connection to the utility’s grid. The couple converted the 63-year-old former automobile dealership building into retail and restaurant space.
The Mitchell Building’s photovoltaic system is one among many of the energy-saving technology and sustainable building products offered by Baker Renewable both for new and renovation projects where alterative energy systems like solar might prove viable.
“The Mitchell is typical of what the sustainable energy products we offer can achieve when tailored to a client’s specific facility needs,” said Jason Epstein, Baker Renewable Energy’s manager. “The key in this industry is identifying a specific solution with the right, practical technology.”
Baker Renewable Energy is a subsidiary of Raleigh-based Baker Roofing, the third-largest roofing company in the United States with roofing and renewable energy projects across much of the Southeastern U.S.
The Christoffersons say that with incentives offered by the NC Greenpower program, as well as state and federal energy tax credits, they will yield a payback in less than four years for the system.
The system at The Mitchell allows the developers to achieve real-time monitoring of the system through a simple dashboard interface accessible with any computer with internet capabilities.
Baker Renewable Energy has expertise in the installation of solar photovoltaic systems, solar thermal systems, wind turbines, innovative garden roofing and other renewable products and systems that demonstrate a commitment to environmentally sustainable building and construction.
The company is well-versed in The LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System which is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green building. Baker Renewable’s key managers are LEED Accredited Professionals (AP) designated by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Cafe Carolina and Bakery Completes Fundraiser for Children's Flight of Hope
Café Carolina collected $1 donations from customers and each donation was recognized by hanging a paper airplane inside the restaurant with the customer’s name written on it. Children’s Flight of Hope provides free air transportation to critically ill or injured children who are unable to reach medical care otherwise.
This was the first year the two organizations partnered, and Café Carolina hopes to continue to support the valiant effort of the group in the future. Participating locations included Café Carolina and Bakery restaurants in: Cary, Cameron Village, downtown in the Wachovia Building and in Chapel Hill.
"We were very pleased and grateful to have had the opportunity to work with such a caring company that truly cares about their community," said Amy J. Carver, executive director of Children's Flight of Hope. "The money raised by Cafe Carolina will fund a flight for an ill child so that they may receive life saving treatment."
Children’s Flight of Hope is based out of Raleigh-Durham International Airport and strives to complete at least 100 missions annually. Since each trip is free to the family, Children’s Flight of Hope relies solely on private contributions.
“We recognized what a noble cause Children’s Flight of Hope is working to support and wanted to be a part of it,” said Pam Spivey, senior brand manager with Café Carolina parent company Boddie-Noell Enterprises. “We could not have completed this fundraiser without the generous support of our customers, and we look forward to working with Children’s Flight of Hope again in the future.”

Lifestyle Property Solutions to Manage Sales & Marketing for JELD-WEN Communities' Running Y Ranch and RidgeWater in Oregon
LPS, which provides strategic sales and marketing services for upscale residential communities across the U.S., will provide sales and marketing management for the Running Y Ranch and RidgeWater communities. LPS will deliver a strategic sales strategy as well as manage on-site sales, sales training, prospect development and all marketing including advertising and Web site development.
“JELD-WEN has a history of quality development in the Pacific Northwest with a reputation for integrity and treating others well, both of which provide a great foundation for us to begin our work,” said LPS Principal Ben Jenkins.
Running Y Ranch and RidgeWater are two among several residential and resort properties in the Klamath Lake area that have earned JELD-WEN Communities a reputation for quality developments that celebrate the region's spectacular natural beauty.
“What really appealed to us was the quality and thought given to these communities by JELD-WEN Communities and in a setting that is a true paradise for an outdoor enthusiast,” said Jenkins.
Running Y Ranch features 3,600 acres of wooded hills and meadows that are typical of south Oregon’s natural beauty east of the Cascades. The development, whose Running Y Ranch Lodge was one of Oregon’s original destination lodges, also includes the state’s only Arnold Palmer-designed golf course. The community also features indoor swimming and fitness facilities, equestrian options and boating, all on a working ranch that overlooks beautiful Upper Klamath Lake.
LPS will be responsible for sales and marketing of the Running Y Ranch’s final phase of residential homesite properties.
Nearby RidgeWater will feature 220 home site properties that are being made available publicly for the first time since the initial release of limited properties to selected prospects two years ago.
Nestled in similar natural beauty like the adjacent Running Y Ranch, RidgeWater features a planned 10,000-square-foot clubhouse, fully equipped recreation center with state-of-the-art fitness facilities, a swimming pool, dining facilities and outdoor vistas for boating, water-skiing, canoeing, hiking and other family activities.
As a leader in providing sales and marketing management for clients with destination, resort and master-planned residential real estate offerings, LPS will provide fresh ideas and insights for the two communities. These tactics also address the challenges of today’s real estate marketplace.
“While it’s been a difficult environment for the real estate business, we’ve found that there are clear opportunities for the best developers to succeed,” said Jenkins. “We’ve seen a trend nationally that in communities which create a very focused and pinpointed program, and where marketing and sales are in complete alignment, developers are taking market share and reaching buyers who are still looking to purchase.”
“We wanted a fresh set of experienced eyes to evaluate our project and in LPS we identified common interests and beliefs and an understanding of what we’re trying to achieve,” said Todd Andres, General Manager of JELD-WEN Communities’ Southern Region.
LPS is a leader in providing sales and marketing leadership for residential developer clients operating destination, resort and master-planned real estate offerings. With over 50 years of combined experience in the destination real estate sales field, LPS can accommodate each developer’s unique vision and product branding with market research, collateral production, direct mail programs, sales team training and placement, and sales transaction management. Boddie-Noell Names Durham Biscuit Maker 2009 Winner of the Hardee's Biscuit Maker Challenge
The four regional winners advanced beyond nearly 850 other biscuit makers employed at the more than 340 Boddie-Noell Hardee’s restaurants across North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Kentucky. The company recognized its four best biscuit makers and announced Jones as the overall winner during a banquet at the Rose Hill Conference Center near Nashville. The top-four winners will be featured later this year on the in-store tray liners at all Hardee’s restaurants operated by Boddie-Noell.
The competition started in January, and each biscuit maker was evaluated based on grooming and appearance, knowledge of proper biscuit equipment, cleanliness and care of biscuit equipment, knowledge and execution of company procedures and the quality of his or her biscuits. The competition’s judges included general and district managers, regional directors of operations and other executives in the restaurant division of Boddie-Noell.
“We are so proud of Shirley, Carolyn, Jimmy and Janie for everything they have done for their communities and our company,” said Terry Lewis, Boddie-Noell’s vice president of operations for Hardee’s. “We look forward to this tradition each year, as it is our chance to honor the dedication and skill of these hard-working individuals.”
Jones, who has worked at the Hardee’s at 3912 N. Duke St. in Durham for 12 years, said that she was proud but shocked when she won the award. “I love to cook – it runs in the family,” said Jones, a mother of three. Her advice to fellow biscuit makers was to “follow the procedures and love what you do.”
In 2008, Hardee’s restaurants owned and operated by Boddie-Noell used 9,572,062 pounds of biscuit mix and 776,480 pounds of biscuit flour – enough dough to fill nearly 258 tractor-trailers. The restaurants also used 759,695 gallons of buttermilk.

Local Raleigth Jewelry Fashion Designer Offers Sneak Peek at Raleigh Fashion Week
Anna Brinkley
(919) 878-1144
RALEIGH, N.C. (May 8, 2009) - Marci Bailey, fashion buyer and consultant for Bailey’s Fine Jewelry, will offer a sneak peek at her jewelry line at Raleigh’s Fashion Week (May 14-16) when she debuts a ring from her upcoming jewelry collection.
The centerpiece of the ring features a stunning round, smoky quartz with diamond-tipped prongs and 14k yellow gold. “This ring is what you would call a statement piece,” said Bailey. “I knew when I designed it that I wanted something really clean with an architectural profile. I wanted to highlight the stone to make it the centerpiece.”
The ring, with a suggested retail of $3,900, will be auctioned during the event to benefit one of the two charities supported at Raleigh Fashion Week, Interact or the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
“I’ve been working on my own jewelry line for the past five or six years,” said Bailey. “I’ve been collecting stones and using them as inspiration to design pieces for myself and my friends. I’m excited to show my work to the public and support a local charity in the process.”
In addition to offering the public a sneak peek at her new line, Bailey will be assisting with selecting and styling the jewelry worn by models in all three runway shows during Fashion Week.
Bailey studied jewelry design at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) under some of the top designers in the county where she earned a degree as a Graduate Gemologist. While attending the GIA she took one of the first CAD/CAM courses offered for jewelry design. She also holds an associate degree in Business from Bellevue College. She has worked at retail jewelry stores across the country and has served as a fashion buyer and consultant for Bailey’s Fine Jewelry over the past five years. In addition to her role as fashion buyer and consultant at Bailey’s Fine Jewelry, she also oversees the Estate Jewelry Collection in all three stores.

Hardee's and Boddie-Noell Achieve Success with 2009 MDA Shamrocks
During the months of February and March, customers at participating Hardee's across North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky and South Carolina were encouraged to purchase a $1 green MDA Shamrock.
Once sold, the Shamrocks, including the customer’s signature, were hung for display in each restaurant to create a festive St. Patrick’s Day atmosphere. In exchange, each customer who purchased a Shamrock received a coupon for a discount in the restaurant.
A portion of the total raised by Boddie-Noell’s Hardee’s will help send children across North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky and South Carolina to MDA summer camps this year. Offering a fun, safe outdoor experience, the camps give participants the opportunity to develop important life skills such as confidence, independence and social ability.
“We are very grateful of what our Hardee's customers and employees provided this year for the Shamrocks Against Dystrophy campaign,” said Jerry Allsbrook, vice president of the national MDA organization and chief marketing officer for Boddie-Noell Enterprises. “This contribution will play a direct role in helping affected children in our own local communities attend MDA camp. We're very proud of that – especially in a tough economic time for everybody."
The contribution from the over 300 Boddie-Noell-operated Hardee’s will be one of the largest received by the MDA in the Carolinas and in Virginia this year.
"MDA is proud and truly fortunate to have the partnership of Boddie-Noell,” said David Stephenson, regional representative for MDA. “We salute the commitment and enthusiasm of these wonderful folks and all the loyal Hardee's patrons who continue to give our families help and hope."
The contributions will go to help with care for local children and adults affected by one of the 43 diseases for which the MDA provides treatment. The local services that the MDA provides include wheelchair, leg brace, and communication device payment assistance, support groups, professional health education, and care at affiliated clinics at Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Roanoke Neurological Center, the Medical College of Virginia and elsewhere.

Hardee's Donates $35,000 to Duke Children's Hospital Radiothon
DURHAM, N.C. (Feb. 25, 2009) – Hardee’s in the Triangle donated $35,000 to Duke Children’s Hospital during the 15th MIX 101.5 WRAL-FM Radiothon. More than 70 Hardee’s restaurants in the Triangle, Rocky Mount, Durham and Fayetteville area participated to help raise funds for the annual fundraiser.
Hardee’s has been a long-time supporter and advocate of the Duke Children’s Hospital since becoming one of the major corporate donors to help build the Children’s Health Center in 2000.
On the final day of the radiothon, it appeared that the fundraiser might come up just short of its $1 million goal. Hardee’s largest franchisee, Boddie-Noell Enterprises, stepped in at 5:15 p.m. to offer an additional $5,000 to bridge the gap. The contribution was dedicated to a local Hardee’s employee whose family experiences with Duke Children’s Hospital gave her first-hand knowledge of the hospital’s commitment to patient care and state-of-the-art medical treatment.
"We are incredibly thankful to Hardee's and Boddie-Noell Enterprises for the support and momentum they gave the MIX 101.5 Radiothon this year," said Kristen Johnson, major gifts officer at Duke Children's Hospital and director of the MIX 101.5 Radiothon. "Miracles will continue to happen at Duke Children's thanks to the generosity and leadership from the Hardee's team and the customers who ordered a miracle combo meal.”
The MIX 101.5 Radiothon for Duke Children’s Hospital began on Feb. 10 at 6 a.m. and concluded on Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. In addition to donating a portion of breakfast, lunch and dinner combo meal sales to Duke Children’s Hospital, Hardee’s provided breakfast to phone bank volunteers and matched contributions made by listeners during the Hardee’s Miracle Breakfast Hour from 8 to 9 a.m. each morning of the radiothon.
“We were honored to step in and offer help to the radiothon to reach their goal of $1 million on the last day,” said Jerry Allsbrook, chief marketing officer for Boddie-Noell Enterprises, the largest Hardee’s franchisee in North Carolina as well as the U.S. “Hardee’s was born in North Carolina and has always been committed to supporting our community and organizations like Duke Children’s Hospital that help provide invaluable services to people across our state and country.”
The MIX 101.5 Radiothon for Duke Children's Hospital raises more money per capita than any other Children's Miracle Network Radiothon in the U.S. and Canada. This year’s event raised more than $1 million to support cutting-edge medical services and programs for pediatric patients and their families. Money raised during the radiothon supports valuable programs and services for their patients and their families, including:
- Preoperative educational brochures, teaching dolls and videos for children.
- A reading program to promote early literacy skills among children at the highest risk for school failure.
- Craft supplies for Child and Adolescent Life program.-Enuresis alarms for the urology patients.

Hardee's Teams Up with Tar Heels Athletics and Donates $14,500 to Lineberger Cancer Center
Bill Boddie, president and chief executive officer of Boddie-Noell Enterprises, the largest Hardee’s franchisee in North Carolina as well as the U.S., presented the check to H. Shelton Earp, M.D., director of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, during halftime at Saturday’s game.
Over the past year, Hardee’s has donated $500 for each touchdown made by the Tar Heels football team at the Meineke Car Care Bowl as well as $25 for every 3-point shot made by a UNC men’s or women’s basketball player at all regular season games, both home and away.
The check presentation took place immediately following the exciting Hardee’s Shoot Out Against Cancer in the Dean E. Smith Center where former UNC All-American and current women’s assistant basketball coach Charlotte Smith sunk several shots to increase the amount of money donated by Hardee’s. Smith made the winning shot during the 1994 Women’s National Championship game, the only one in UNC history. During the contest, Smith proved she still had it by making five free throws worth $500 each and one 3-pointer worth $2,500 from the same spot as her winning shot in 1994.
Thanks to Smith’s efforts, $5,000 was added to the grand total donated by Hardee’s to the UNC Lineberger Center.
“This was something fun and exciting for Hardee’s to do,” said Jerry Allsbrook, chief marketing officer for Boddie-Noell Enterprises. “We wanted to give Tar Heel fans a bigger reason to cheer when their team scores. Teaming up with Tar Heel athletics and supporting the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center demonstrates the deep roots of Hardee’s in North Carolina as well as our support and commitment to the fight against cancer. ”
As part of the UNC system, the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only public comprehensive cancer center for the people of North Carolina. The mission is to reduce cancer occurrence and death in North Carolina and the nation through research, treatment, training and outreach. The Lineberger Cancer Center is also recognized as one of 40 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers and is ranked in the top 15 institutions nationally in cancer research funding.
“It takes a team to play great basketball and skill to make 3-point shots. At the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center we take the team approach to cancer, with many skilled specialists involved in planning and providing leading cancer care for each patient,” said Earp. “We are most grateful to Hardee’s for their strong support of cancer research at North Carolina’s public comprehensive cancer center.”

Couple Gets a "Kickoff of a Lifetime" at N.C. State Football Game Thanks to Bailey's Jewelry
McSwain thought her family - longtime Wolfpack fans and supporters of Wolfpack athletics - was being recognized on the field for their ongoing support of the Wolfpack Club. To her surprise, Crisp, whom ironically she met at a Thursday night football game in October of 2003, was actually there to propose to her instead. She accepted his proposal.
Crisp was the lucky winner of the “Kickoff of a Lifetime” promotion at Bailey’s Fine Jewelry which was a contest to give away a 1-carat Cushette diamond ring to anyone willing to propose on the football field during the N.C. State home football game against the University of Miami.
“We’re delighted for Sam and Kelly and felt privileged to be a part of their ‘kickoff’ to a lifetime together,” said Trey Bailey, director of operations at Bailey’s Fine Jewelry. “We provide a lot of engagement rings, but we don’t ever get to see the proposals so this was almost as exciting for us as it was for them.”
