Transmission manufacturer will invest additional $14 million, create 250 new jobs
DURHAM, N.C. (March 12, 2012) – AW North Carolina, Inc. today announced plans to increase current production volumes at the company’s facility on Old Oxford Highway. An investment of additional machinery is expected to exceed $14 million and the increase in manufacturing will generate as many as 250 new jobs over the next 12 months.
AW North Carolina announced in April 2010 plans to invest an additional $100 million at the facility creating over 360 new jobs. Those plans have been fulfilled and this new announcement is in addition to the success of the April 2010 project.
In addition to an increase in current manufacturing, much of the additional production will support the Toyota Motor Manufacturing West Virginia operation. This project will also bring new business to several suppliers in the U.S., creating additional jobs.
An industry-leading manufacturer of automatic transmissions and transmission components, AW North Carolina broke ground in Durham just over 13 years ago to produce components for Toyota Motor Manufacturing’s front wheel drive passenger vehicles. Since that time, AW North Carolina has expanded operations to manufacture fully assembled rear wheel drive and front wheel drive automatic transmissions.
“We are excited to continue growing in response to the success of Toyota’s products. Adding another 250 people to AWNC’s 1,500 full-time and temporary workforce is exciting and speaks well of our Team Members’ past performance and commitment to quality,” said Will Collins, vice president of AW North Carolina.
“AW North Carolina’s decision to expand again in North Carolina is welcomed news and we are looking forward to continuing our successful partnership,” said N.C. Gov. Bev Perdue. “North Carolina continues to be attractive to globally competitive companies like AW North Carolina because of our customized training programs through the N.C. Community College system, our skilled workforce and top business climate.”
AW North Carolina has earned a number of expansion projects and new lines of production from Toyota over the past several years. “Our customers’ commitment to environmentally friendly automotive products has always been a shared vision with AW North Carolina. The endorsement from Toyota to increase our production capacity strengthens our long-term commitment to Team Members, their families and our community,” said Collins.
