Parker Poe's Steven Long Elected to UNC Board of Governors

RALEIGH, NC (March  22, 2013) – Steven B. Long, partner in Parker Poe’s Raleigh office, was elected to serve on the University of North Carolina Board of Governors, the policy-making body responsible for the supervision, management and governance of the 17 institutions in the UNC system.

Mr. Long was one of eight individuals chosen by the North Carolina Senate to serve a four-year term. The UNC Board of Governors is comprised of 32 voting members. The General Assembly elects 16 members every two years – eight from the Senate and eight from the House.

Mr. Long specializes in tax law and advises businesses and individuals regarding tax and employee benefit issues. He has extensive experience working with employers in banking, retail, technology and other industries to establish, maintain, and correct defects in tax-qualified retirement plans, executive compensation agreements, and other employee benefits. He also assists clients in the establishment and operation of tax-exempt organizations.

In addition to his work in the legal arena, Mr. Long is very active in the local community. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Alzheimer’s North Carolina, Inc., the John William Pope Civitas Institute and the Raleigh Hall of Fame.

Joining Mr. Long in his appointment to the Board are William M. Kotis of Summerfield, Scott Lampe of Davidson, Joan G. MacNeill of Webster, Therence O. Pickett of Greensboro, Robert Sterling Rippy of Wilmington, Harry Leo Smith, Jr., of Greenville and John Craig Souza of Raleigh.

Mr. Long received his B.S. in 1982 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his J.D. degree in 1991 and an LL.M. degree in tax law in 1997, both from Georgetown University Law Center.
